Pressing Matters *

Lay next to me
Lace your arms around me
on this cotton field
we’ll impress our
feelings together
like flowers in a book

Lay next to me
beneath blotting sheets
Stamen meeting petal
in unity

Delve into that tome
let us open the leaves
and bathe them
in soft light
bring them to life
once more
as we lay together

Between the sheets

In that room, a stench of togetherness lingers
and I still see her shadow fall softly on the bed
strands of hair splay across pillows
as you lie comfortably
heels over head

In the same room, you turn down the comforter
and ask me to forget that it was stained by deceit
taking your hand I will climb in beside you
lulled by the promise
of a clean sheet
